He did know his cousin King Edward the Confessor who, before his demise, appointed him successor to the throne of England. However, upon the death of the king on 5 January 1066, another pretender, Harold Godwinson, a powerful English baron, grabbed the crown for himself.

Born in Falaise in 1027, he’s the son of Robert the Magnificent. His birth, later considered to be illegitimate, earned him the nickname of William the Bastard.

William the Conqueror became the Duke of Normandy

The son of Robert the Magnificent, William the Conqueror had been the Duke of Normandy since 1035. He did know his cousin King Edward the Confessor who, before his demise, appointed him successor to the throne of England. However, upon the death of the king on 5 January 1066, another pretender, Harold Godwinson, a powerful English baron, grabbed the crown for himself. This seizure of control gave rise to quite an epic, which would prompt William to head an expedition to conquer England and accede to the throne, which he believed was rightfully his.

Mora is the warship gifted to William by his wife Matilda of Flanders.

The Normandy Conquest by William the Conqueror

All alone in the early hours of 29 September, the crew of Mora got to within sight of Pevensey, in Sussex, before being joined some hours later by the rest of the fleet. The departure date, fairly late for the period, was not selected by chance: William made the most of the fact that the north of England was being invaded by another pretender to the throne, which forced Harold to leave the shores of Sussex exposed. On 14 October 1066, the Battle of Hastings culminated in the death of Harold and heralded the start of the Norman Conquest by William the Conqueror.

Until his death in 1087, William headed one of the most powerful duchies in the French kingdom and was the King of England under the name of William I.

Creation of the La Mora – Guillaume le Conquérant association on 2 February in Honfleur

This association aims : to bring Mora back to life through a show site open to the public, to create a scenographic journey, and to be a lever for employment, integration and training.
